Is it normal for a stove pilot to go out from time to time?

my landlord recently did a routine maintenance inspection of my apartment and said he needed to re-light the pilot on my stove. just wondering if it's normal for the pilot to go out from time to time. also if its unlit, can the gas cause carbon monoxide poisoning?
